Bericht First Lieutenant Glen E. Mathiesen, Henri Chapelle.
Hallo iedereen,

Glen E. Mathiesen
First Lieutenant, U.S. Army
Service # O-384382
22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division
Entered the Service from: Washington
Died: 4-Dec-44
Buried at: Plot H Row 2 Grave 62
Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery
Henri-Chapelle, Belgium
Awards: Purple Heart

1 LT Glen E. Mathiesen
ID: 0-384382
Branch of Service: U.S. Army
Hometown: Whitman County, WA
Status: DOW

"On 3rd december the relief of the regiment began. It was retarded by an enemy attack against the 1st batallion in the morning, an air attack by approximatily 40 german fighter planes in the afternoon and heavy artillery, mortar, and machinegun fire in the 2nd battalions area."

Waarschijnlijk is Glen hierbij gewond geraakt.

Daarom ben ik bibliotheken gaan e-mailen in Washington State:

Dear Sjoerd Aarts,

Thank you for inquiry email, unfortunately I was not able to find any information on soldier Glen E. Mathiesen here at our library. I went ahead and attached our genealogy letter which will be better of help. Also, if you search our website and click on genealogy from the web resources link, there are some several usefull links. I went ahead and attached the link in the email

Hello,Sjoerd,
I looked on Ancestry.com and found the Mathiesen family in Colfax in the 1930 US census. I knew they would be in Colfax since that is where he is on the WWII Memorial plaque at the cemetery. Glen's father is named Atto or Otto (hard to tell by the writing), but Otto would be the more likely English name. He is 48 years old and was born in Michigan. He was 25 years old when he married. Otto's parents were born in Norway and Otto is an insurance agent. Glen's mother is named Hazel U., is 43 years old and was 20 when she married. She was born in South Dakota and her parents were born in French Canada. Glen had a sister, Betty J., who was either 18 or 16 in the 1930 census. It looks more like 18, but someone has penciled in 16 above that, so it is hard to say. Glen and his sister were both born in Idaho. The family is renting a home/apt..
In the 1920 census, the family is living in Newport, Pend Oreille County, Idaho. It is clear in this census that the father is named Otto and the sister is 6, so 16 would be right for the 1930 census. Everything else is the same except that it says Hazel's parents were born in Wisconsin instead of French Canada. It says Otto's mother tongue is Norwegian and he is a cashier in a bank. They are boarders in a hotel with many other people on Washington Avenue.
In the 1910 census I found Otto and Hazel living in a hotel in Spokane, Washington, which is about 75 miles north of here (Pullman) and about 60 miles north of Colfax. They had been married 3 years. She was a music teacher and he was a bookkeeper, but I can't tell for what type of company. It is hard to read.
I'm sure there would be an obituary in the Colfax paper when Glen died. I can look for it when I go to the college library here in Pullman and look at newspapers on microfilm. It might also be in our Pullman paper which we have at our genealogy library here in Pullman. I go there on Wed. mornings, so I could look when I am there.
It wouldn't take long to do this (probably only about 30 minutes) and I can let you know if I find anything. Then maybe we can see what you find in his personnel file and go from there. I won't charge you for the little bit of work to see if there is an obituary, or this bit of work I just did with the censuses. If you decide you wish further research, then we can start the paid research at that time.
What a nice thing for you to do to adopt a grave. How was it that you decided to do this? I will look forward to hearing from you further and will be back in touch. Sincerely, Monica Peters

Hi, Sjoerd,
I just wanted to touch base with you again about the research on Glen Mathiesen. I have looked in our Pullman newspapers to see if there might have been an article about his death, but found nothing. I have put it on my list to look in the Colfax paper next time I go to the library and look at microfilm. It would most likely be in that paper since that is where he lived. I will let you know when I do that. You can let me know when the personnel file arrives and we can see where we might go from there.

Vriendelijke groeten,

Sjoerd.
