Peiper did not saved a single Jewish life, as he did not saved a single life of French slave workers or Russian or American POWs!
On conrary, the KZ at Borgo was installed, after the Leibstandarte showed up at that small Italian village near Cuneo, on September 18, 1943. Still, it is not clear, how much the SD was involved in that. But there can not be any doubt, that this was done with full support, mostlikely, by intention of Peipers troops. Eyewittness decribed in at interview with me, that he can recall the name Adolf Hitler on the arms, which means cuff titles.
Therefore, Peiper could not have rescued any Jews, as he claimed, when he arrived at Cuneo area by September 14, 1943, on contrary, his troops did the arresting.
On the list of European Jews arrested at Borgo and deported to Auschwitz and murdered, about 350 people, were a lot of German and Austrian Jews. A complete list can be found in Cavaglion, Alberto: Nella notte straniera. Gli ebrei di St. Martin Vesubie, 8 settembre-21 novembre 1943, Cuneo: L’Arciere, 1991(2.). As the Jews were deported by train, the papers are complete.
There was not a single Rabbi with the Jewish group, when the Jews arrived from southern France to the Italian area. One of the Berlin Jews was Berthold Linder. He had married on Dezember 6, 1941 Gisella Spira at Sallelles d`Aud, Southern France. Their son Roland was born December 1942. All three were arrested at Borgo San Dalmazzo interniert and via Drancy (the KZ north of Paris) brought on Dezember 7, 1943 to Auschwitz. Arrirving at Auschwitz Gisella Linder and her one year old son were gassed. Berthold Linder survived. Also the Heilbronner German Jewish woman Johanna Marx faced the same destiny and was murdered at Auschwitz. Her son Walter Marx, at that time a teenager, survived, as he was in a hospital, when the Jews were deported from Brogo, while he had an accident, when he had to work for the Leibstandarte. His story can be found in Zuccottis book, as well as in New York Times, May 7, 2000, when there was a report about the meeting with the Italian woman Magdalena Gibaudo from Borgo, who helped him to hid.
There is also a rumor spread by Neonazis, that during the preinvestigation of the Boves Masssacre in the 1960th, a Rabbi claimed at trial, that he was rescued by Peiper. This is also not true. Nothing about that story can be find in the files at Bundesarchiv Ludwigsburg. A total invent. Peiper told this to HIAG buddies as well as to Charles Whiting, who was totally duped by Peiper- and some fellow in Asia made a comic out of it- a fine and superb source for every scholar historian.
