On New Years Eve, the 6th armored attacked the German forces East of Bastogne. The Division forced the Germans away from Bastogne and began the first major counter-offensive to drive back the German offensive. For the next several days the 6th Armored fought stiff German resistance and bitter cold for each small gain. At one point the Germans had 6 Divisions attacking the 6th Armored. The Division halted and consolidated its position on January 3 1945. For the next week, the Division drove off wave after wave of attacking German units.

With the help of massed artillery and fighter-bomber support, the 6th Armored went back on the offensive. With the 35th Infantry Division in support, the 6th Armored drove back the German defenders and recaptured several towns and key roads. By the end of January, the German's Ardennes offensive had been beaten and the 6th Armored pulled into Corps reserve

dit is ook wel een informatief stukje:

When the Super Sixth hit the front Dec. 29, the 101st Airborne was on the left, the 35th Div. on the right flank. Entering the campaign along a line two miles northeast of Bastogne, CC A jumped off Dec. 31. A task force under Maj. Chester E. Kennedy, Detroit, took the high ground near Wardin, assisted by Task Force Brown on the right. Further gains were made the next three days against mounting resistance. Neffe and Bizery fell to CC A while a task force under Lt. Col. A.R. Wall, Denver, captured Mageret, went on to enter Michamps. Other forces commanded by Lt. CoI. Embry D. LaGrew, Lexington, Ky., and Lt. Col. Frank K. Britton, Hartford, Conn., entered Wardin and took high ground to the south.

But their 12,000 yard front proved too much to hold with only three infantry battalions, and lines were shortened to 8000 yards. Then came the Germans' inning. While withdrawing at dusk Jan. 4, task forces under Col. Britton and Lt. Col. Charles E. Brown, Tacoma, Wash., were struck by artillery, tanks and infantry. Although temporarily cut off, some units withdrew to a new position, organized and repulsed the attack. Troops under Col. Wall and Lt. Col. H. C. Davall, Washington, D.C., stopped counter-attacks in CC B's sector with infantry, tanks, TDs and well-directed artillery.

Germans held the upper hand for five days, directing tank-infantry teams against the entire front. The tide shifted Jan. 9 when the 6th began to surge forward reinforced by the 320th Regt., 35th Inf. Div.

It was a grueling ordeal. Nine long, bitter-cold days were used to push back the enemy four miles, taking the ground astride the Longvllly-Bourcy highway and the by-now familiar towns of Wardin, Mageret, Benonchamps, Arloncourt, Oubourcy, Longvilly and Michamps.

Germans pulled back from the western-most tip of the salient, and the 6th ploughed forward. Troine, Crendal, Lullange, Hoffelt and Hachiville fell quickly to tank- infantry teams making five-mile dashes through heavy snow. Strong rear-guard action was encountered, but Asselborn, Weiler, Basbellain. Biwisch and Troisvierges were retaken in two days. The enemy's Ardennes salient was wiped out completely during the next three days. Wilwerdange, Briedfeld and the high ground astride the Skyline Drive were captured.

By Jan. 26, with losses of 2298 prisoners, 87 tanks, 33 big guns, 17 vehicles and one JU-88, had withdrawn across the Our River, more than 20 miles from Bastogne.

THE ARDENNES: BATTLE OF THE BULGE
CHAPTER XXIV The Third Army Offensive Widening the Bastogne Corridor

The battle fought by the 6th Armored Division east of Bastogne
in het stuk van Page 629 lees je:
There was no cover where his troops were waiting, however, and as the morning wore on intense enemy fire began to take serious toll. He and Grow decided, therefore, to launch a limited objective attack in which the two CCA task forces would start from near the Bastogne-Bras road and thrust northeast.
On the morning of New Year's Day CCB finally was in place on the left of Hines's combat command

Pas later, rond 11.Januari, stoten nog andere US eenheden(35.US Inf.

http://www.super6th.org/brest/Brest1.htm :

http://www.super6th.org/cmbthist/cmbtbulg.htm :
tekst zonder vernomeing van 4 januari maar wel :

Each gain was fought and refought against heavy enemy concentrations of artillery, intensive small arms, huge 120mm mortars and terrifying Nebelwerfer fire. By nightfall, 3 January, the two combat commands were spread over a front of 12,000 yards, which proved too much to hold, and at dark the next day the lines were shortened to 8,000 yards.
It was apparent that the enemy was massing unusually strong concentrations of infantry and armor along the Division's front. It was estimated that elements of six enemy divisions were facing the 6th. Supporting artillery fired many concentrations on these troops during this period, nine battalions massing to fire on enemy troops attempting a counterattack near MAGERET and again in the vicinity of WARDIN. During the attack, Artillery fired TOTs on ARLONCOURT and massed fires of 12 battalions on MICHAMPS, with heavy concentrations being placed on WARDIN.
XIX TAC fighter bombers worked in close support, hitting one ammunition dump, concentrations of enemy vehicles, columns on roads, enemy tanks and defended enemy towns.

After three days of bitter fighting and constant enemy counterattacks in deep snow and near-zero weather, the Division halted temporarily to consolidate its positions and secure much needed rest.

Two combat teams of Combat Command A made small gains in the vicinity of WARDIN and fresh elements entered the line. The line at this time ran generally south from the neighborhood of OUBOURCY along the edge of the woods a distance of 1500 yards, then southeast across the BASTOGNE-LONGVILLY road where it turned southwest through the BOIS ST LAMBERT, around the western edge of WARDIN to the banks of the MARVIE and a junction with the 35th Infantry Division. Plans at this time were to clear the large wooded pocket southeast of BASTOGNE and destroy the large enemy concentration sheltered there. The 6th was to continue attack toward LONGVILLY.

For five days following, the enemy tank-infantry teams struck at the Division's line seeking a soft spot. Under the greatest of stress and strain the Division's troops withstood the German drives, turning them back each time with heavy personnel and vehicular losses.

On the 9th of January the tide was beginning to turn. Reinforced by part of the 320th Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, the 6th Armored Division pushed forward on an attack. Combat Command A attacked and captured the high ground southeast of MARVIE, strengthening its tie-in with elements of the 35th Infantry Division on its right which was reinforced by a loan of tanks from the Division, while Combat Command B continued contact with 101 Airborne Division on the Division's left flank. On 10 January the 4th Armored Division was inserted on a narrow front on the left to attack through Combat Command B. The attack failed to make headway north of MAGERET and in midafternoon, that Division was suddenly pulled back into reserve while Combat Command B resumed defense of the line.
